Research and Planning 17: Our planned costumes and props, hair and make-up

Our planned costumes
Blake: Blake's costume consisted of a dark jacket, dark trousers, a white shirt and a black tie. The costume and hairstyle was influenced by James Bond, as we wanted our protagonist to be recognisable as a strong action lead. As our costume plays an important role in signifying the genre, we decided to dress our actor in a somewhat conventional costume for a male lead character.

Jen: We decided that Jen would wear a leather jacket, a casual t-shirt and black trousers. As Jen's character is one who has moved from a career in the police force to becoming involved in more criminal practices, we decided that her costume had to compliment her strong character. We dressed our actress in a leather jacket and a casual vest top, similar to characters such as Black Widow from the Marvel universe.

The rest of our cast: Our remaining actors play the other people at the poker game. We wanted to make it clear that our setting was outside of a casino, so Rounders was a very useful reference. In Rounders, the focus of the film is a high-stakes poker game between two people. Around the table, there are many people who can be seen wearing different costumes. We found that a lot of these costumes consisted of casual clothes such as leather jackets, checked shirts and hooded jumpers. Therefore we decided to dress our actors similarly, with one wearing a red checked shirt and the other wearing a black t-shirt and leather jacket.

Props:
For our shoot, there were several key props that were necessary. Many of these were necessary to establish our setting and mise-en-scéne, such as the poker chips, cards and felt. Some of this could be provided by members of our group, but for some of our other props we had to ask our school mates. The other necessary props were the ring, which was needed to establish the different timeframes within our story, and the guns used by Jen and the two thugs at the climax of our opening sequence.
