Research and Planning 16: Casting

In our sequence, we had five characters total. Blake and Jen; our two main characters, alongside another three to fill up the table.

Blake
He once worked as a police officer before becoming a private detective; he lives a quiet life with his partner. However, after she is kidnapped he embarks on a journey to rescue her. When casting this character, we wanted to make sure he was a recognisable lead character. We dressed our actor in smart, formal clothing to mimic popular film characters such as James Bond and Jason Bourne. His hairstyle also follows the vintage look that these characters have.

Jen

Jen used to work as a police officer alongside Blake. However, at the same time that Blake became a private detective, Jen began to involve herself with the back-alley gambling scene. She was fired as a result. When deciding how to structure our main female character, we wanted to make sure we avoided the stereotype of a glamourous female sidekick. Instead, we aimed to represent her as being more tough to reflect her character. We will connote this image through the setting of the poker game and the leather jacket in her costume. It was important for our female character to share traits with other strong female characters in films, such as Lucy from Lucy and Elizabeth from the Pirates of the Caribbean films.

The rest of our cast
The three remaining members of our cast play the other three people at the table, the dealer and two thugs. Our dealer wears a somewhat conventional costume, consisting of a waistcoat and a bowtie. The two thugs have similarly traditional costumes: one wears a leather jacket whilst the other has casual clothes. When casting our actors, we wanted to make sure we had a diverse cast. However, we were still limited by availability, as some were unable to set aside the time.
